New Meter Technology

As of January 1, 2012, all parking meters in Indianapolis accept credit card payments in addition to coins and phone payments, making it easier for motorists to park and enjoy the downtown and Broad Ripple areas. The updated system is a mix of single space meters and multi-space pay boxes, providing convenience and reducing street clutter in a thriving metropolis. This innovative technology is environmentally-friendly, depending on solar power and collection/maintenance alerts to reduce ParkIndy’s carbon footprint.

ParkIndy has implemented a state of the art parking system in Indianapolis. Indianapolis is the first city in the United States where all parking meters can both be paid by credit card or phone. In 2012, ParkIndy will bring even more technological advances to our Indianapolis customers by installing sensors in thousands of parking spaces.

Meter Hours of Operation and Rates

In the downtown core area and along Massachusetts Avenue, the days and hours of meter operation are Monday through Saturday from 7am to 9pm. The rate for these meters is $1.50 per hour.

The days and hours of operation for areas downtown outside of the core are Monday through Saturday from 7am to 8pm. The hours in residential areas are Monday through Friday from 7am to 6pm. The rate for both of these meter areas is $1.00 per hour.

Upcoming Features

ParkIndy has installed sensors around the spokes of Monument Circle, in Broad Ripple and along Mass. Ave. in preparation for the release of a smart phone application called “Parker” that will help motorists locate and navigate to available spaces. The smart phone app will be available for these areas soon and in spring, and more sensors will be installed throughout downtown to provide motorists with a comprehensive view of on street space availability.

$20 Million Investment

The $20 million upfront investment by ParkIndy in Indianapolis has been used to spur infrastructure improvements in areas served by parking meters. Further, the City of Indianapolis is leveraging $6.35 million of that fund to spur construction of a new $15 million mixed-use parking structure on the southwest corner of the intersection of Broad Ripple and College avenues. The facility will have 350 parking spaces with retail space and a police substation on the first floor.
